🦋 Personality
Option 2: You may instead choose words from the following list to expand upon as your personality section. Elaborate on what this word means to your character, specifically their thoughts about it. For Canon Characters, you can choose five words. For Original Characters, you will need to choose seven words. Keep the word count to 100-300 per choice.
Tavis has always been clothed in Healer's Green, the standard uniform of the time for Healers. During both the Reign of the Festils, the Healer's Green awarded someone a wide berth. It was respected, and even if Tavis was a boy of around 13 during the Festil's reign, he remembers that, clothed in at least a student's Healer's Green. But all that changed during the Haldane Restoration. His Healer's Green, along with the badges of a Healer and royal service on the sleeves, should have kept him safe. It didn't. It made him a target, both from other Deryni who saw him as aiding the enemy, and from the humans who hated and feared him for what he could do.
Tavis stopped trusting after the attack that cut off his hand, even to the point of letting other Healers in. Healer's Green didn't protect him. Why should he trust it now? He's wary. He's scared, he's hurt. He doesn't trust. His ability to trust others first involves the others inability to hurt him. Other Healer's have compared him to another student who one day went 'berserk' and started murdering people. Tavis is referred to as going 'critical' and not just physically. But isn't madness just trauma that hasn't been dealt with? It's not paranoia if everyone is actually out to get you.
Death is something Tavis has spent his entire life working both for and against as a healer. He knows the body's limits. But it is also something he would really like to happen to his attackers. He works with the Court to try and find them, not only as someone who would dare attack a healer, but someone who would attack a healer who worked to help a small child. Tavis is profoundly bitter at the loss of his hand, believing at first that he can't heal with only one hand, that he's defective and flawed. That bitterness festers, and he continues to hide the loss of his hand, as well as hiding from contact that might open him up. He is also profoundly bitter that his own kind would mutilate him. Tavis is so consumed by bitterness that others remark that the bitterness and risk to his sanity is actually worse than the massive blood loss and physical trauma he's endured during the attack. Dead is what the part of him that might have once believed in safety; in being and let be.
If thy hand offends thee, cut it off! Those were the words Tavis' attackers forced into his mind as they beat down his shields and body and cut off his hand, for the sin of helping a human child. He is profoundly bitter that his own people turned against him-- a healer--over helping as a defenseless child, even if that child is in line for the throne and possibly waging a war against Tavis' people. They do a profound amount of physical and psychological damage in a short period of time before the young princes and the royal guards find him bleeding to death in the alley. If his own people would do this to him, and the humans are stripping away his rights and killing his people, where does he belong? Chained to the fate of a small child, who can't defend himself, and the sin of trying to ease the hurt. Some would say there is little good in being a kept Deryni, in being a collaborator, but Tavis stays that sin up until the very end, when it becomes too unsafe for even him to stay. Vengeance keeps him going, wanting those who took his hand to pay. While he might think his motive are altruistic, staying because of his young prince, he wanted to see those who cut off his hand rot in hell.
Tavis didn't used to feel this way. Before the attack, he was indifferent. Everyone could believe and feel the way they wanted too, it didn't matter. He was aware that there were Deryni who did not approve of other Deryni being in service to humans, just as there were humans who did not approve of Deryni. Tavis was perfectly content as long as he was allowed to help Javan. Nothing else mattered.
Tavis wants revenge. Once his desire only limited itself to wanting to Heal, to help. Now, he's need for vengeance drives him to assist the human Regents in their own anti-Deryni crusade. To that end Tavis uses threats, his own healing abilities, drugs and force to find the truth. He wants those responsible, and he wants to hurt them just as much as they hurt him. After finding one of them--and the experience being wholly unhelpful, his quest for vengeance against his attackers quieted a bit. But Tavis still falls. He still attacks his own kind, in a quest to find out what happened to his charge Javan. He uses his own healing abilities and medicine against another Healer, and it results in the man's death. The result of these actions which he had thought would result in righteous truth, only end in tragedy, and it forces Tavis to start to re-evaluate who his enemies actually are.
Javan, his clubfooted child prince. The one person Tavis cares about more than himself. He has an incredibly codependent relationship with the boy, to the point where they are inseparable and have trouble functioning apart. Tavis has to be drugged along with the other young princes because he keeps getting in the way. That scene alone leads Tavis down a path of vengeance, hatred and death. Tavis is drugged and his memory erased, but not the feeling behind the betrayal--betrayed again by his own kind. Because he was in the way. Not trusting Rhys, the older Healer who attacked and drugged him, leads Tavis to do the same to him, trying desperately to find out why not only he was drugged but what happened to Javan that night. It all goes back to Javan. Sadly, Tavis' quest for revenge is not only misconstrued, it ends in the death of multiple people who he had not intended to hurt. All he can think of up until that point is getting revenge for Javan, finding out what was done to him, to both of them. To get answers and revenge for the pain caused to both of them.
Tavis literally lives and dies for Javan. He's the boys strength and protector, and acts out of a misguided sense of honor and pride. Tavis wants Javan to not only be safe, and loved, he wants him to have the childhood that Tavis never got. Trained as a healer under Varnarite training wasn't easy. It was physically, psychically and emotionally abusive, and he sees a lot of similarities in how Javan is treated. He protects him, when he can.

(MINDSPEECH)🦋 RP Samples
Please link your RP samples from the TDM or previous play here. Sample threads can't be older than a year and must be from an open community. RP samples do not need to meet a required length, they instead convey the idea of your character's personality and how they speak, think, and interact with the world around them. A single link will suffice, unless your sample is from a texting-only thread. In that case, we'll need an additional sample detailing the character's thought processes and physical gestures.
